The Trust

Disability Equality Group

East Cheshire NHS Trust has been committed to improving services and access to services for disabled people for many years. The trust has a Disability Equality Group (DEG) with a strong input from disabled people including staff. The group exists to promote disability equality for staff, patients, carers and visitors to the trust and to improve access and experience for all. It focuses on all elements of disability and meets every six weeks.

The group reviews plans for new buildings or upgrades and makes recommendations to improve patient experience. User representatives also undertake a programme of access assessments around all areas of the trust. The trust has developed an equality, dignity and respect pledge which covers all areas of the equality agenda, including disability.

The trust has been approved as 'disability confident' committed. To achieve this the trust provided evidence of meeting the following actions:

  • Ensure our recruitment process is inclusive and accessible
  • Communicate and promote vacancies
  • Offer an interview to disabled applicants if they meet the minimum criteria
  • Anticipate and provide reasonable adjustments as required
  • Support any existing employee who acquires a disability or long-term condition to stay in work

The trust has also given a commitment to offer apprenticeships for people with disabilities.

Equality, dignity and respect pledge

Our aim is to be the hospital where people choose to be treated. To be an organisation that people want to join and remain with as staff, allowing them to make their distinctive contributions and achieve their full potential.

We will ensure that patients, staff, visitors and the public are treated fairly, with dignity and respect.

East Cheshire NHS Trust will not tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment on the grounds of race, nationality, gender, gender reassignment status, disability (including learning disabilities, autism and mental health), age, religious belief, sexual orientation, marital status (including civil partnerships) and pregnancy.
