Dermatology

The Dermatology Team are based at Macclesfield District General Hospital and are part of the Community Business Group. The team offer dermatology services for the treatment of skin conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema, and for the early diagnosis and management of skin cancer. Services include; ultraviolet therapy, patch testing, dermatological surgery, photodynamic therapy and mole mapping.

Our departmental objectives

  • Provide a first class dermatology service in a holistic and professional manner.
  • Provide dermatology services as close to the patients as possible, including within the hospital and peripheral clinics.
  • Raise awareness as to the early detection of skin cancers and their prevention.
  • Educate and empower patients to take an active role in the management of chronic skin conditions.
  • Arrange for any investigations/ biopsies to be undertaken in a timely manner and the results to be communicated in a way that is acceptable to the patients.

Our services

The Dermatology Team provide outpatient clinics in Macclesfield, Handforth, Wilmslow, Knutsford, Congleton and Poynton ensuring that services are as close to patients as possible.

Treatment of a variety of conditions, both acute and chronic including but not exclusively:

  • Acne
  • Behcet's disease
  • Boils
  • Cellulitis
  • Eczema (atopic)
  • Eczema (contact dermatitis)
  • Eczema (discoid)
  • Eczema (varicose)
  • Folliculitis
  • Fungal nail infection
  • Genital herpes
  • Impetigo
  • Leg ulcers
  • Lichen planus
  • Lupus
  • Molluscum contagiosum
  • Pemphigoid
  • Psoriasis
  • Ringworm
  • Rosacea
  • Scabies
  • Vitiligo
  • Early diagnosis and management of skin cancer.
  • Provide information, advice, support for patients diagnosed with skin cancers and their carers, including referral to specialist support services where necessary, such as, counselling, complimentary therapy, lymphoedema clinics.
  • Provide education and support for patients in relation to the management of chronic skin conditions in an environment where the needs of each patient and their family are cared for in a professional and holistic manner.

Provision of specialist services

  • Patch testing
  • Photodynamic therapy for selected biopsy proven skin cancers and pre malignant (in situ) conditions.
  • Phototherapy (UVB) and photo chemotherapy (PUVA) for treatment of inflammatory skin problems.
  • Complete body mole mapping or surveillance of individual lesions.
  • Outpatient and day case surgery for skin cancers, benign lesions and diagnostic biopsies.
  • Dermoscopy of pigmented lesions (moles)
  • Nurse led clinics for the management of eczema, psoriasis and for the follow up of melanoma patients.

Opening/visiting times

9.00am - 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. Calls outside these times will be forwarded to an answer machine.

How do I refer/access the service?

Patients who require a specialist dermatology diagnosis and management of acute or chronic conditions need to be referred to the service by the GP. This includes patients requiring access to any of the specialist services mentioned above.
