Home Intravenous Therapy Service

The Home Intravenous Therapy Service (HITS) has been developed using national evidence that illustrates the benefits of community led intravenous (IV) services, which facilitate a patient’s early discharge from the acute sector to community setting and where appropriate, prevents admission into hospital. The development of such a service provides a proactive platform from which East Cheshire NHS Trust can promote organisational efficiency and maintain optimum standards of patient care.

Our departmental objectives

  • Our aim is to facilitate early discharge from hospital, which helps to reduce hospital acquired infections and therefore enhancing the patient experience.
  • We aim to promote standardised practice through education.
  • We aim to promote patient partnership.

Our services

We are a 7 day service that works between the acute trust and community setting to provide patients with high quality and efficient care. We work in partnership with local District Nursing Teams providing education and support for community staff. Through competency based assessment and regular updates the HITS Team will ensure a proactive, standardised and patient centred approach to IV therapy in the home and community setting.

The team currently only provides services to patients registered with a GP in the East Cheshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

The team are developing specialist pathways to enable a wider scope of treatments to be delivered in the home and community setting. This will promote equality in service delivery and promote patient satisfaction, speedier recovery and reduce hospital acquired infection.
