We work closely with consultants and other areas of the trust to ensure patients receive their surgery as their condition dictates and within agreed time scales.

Who we are

As part of our philosophy we aim to provide all our patients with high quality intra-operative care. This is from arrival at the theatre doors through to the anaesthetic room, theatre itself and recovery ward. You will be cared for by experienced, trained dedicated personnel including:

  • Theatre nurses
  • Operating department practitioners
  • Recovery nurses
  • Circulating practitioners
  • Surgical assistant
  • Clerical staff

Our senior team

  • Theatre Manager - Mike Cawley

  • Theatre Coordinator- Julie Greenhalgh

Visiting theatre

Our team, led by Mike Cawley, is committed to patient safety and providing quality care for each patient. Both on the ward and whilst in our department you will be asked questions to verify your identity and the planned procedure to be undertaken. You will be asked other questions about your health and preparation for surgery. This enables our safety checks to be carried out ensuring your safety whilst in our care and allows us to provide the optimum care for your individual needs. Any of our staff will be happy to explain our procedures or answer any questions you may have.

If you are able to, you will be given the choice of walking to the theatre doors rather than being taken on a theatre trolley. We have found some patients prefer this option.

We also have a patient information booklet explaining a little more about a visit to theatres which you will be given when you attend the pre-admission clinic.

The recovery ward

Following your surgery you will be cared for by our recovery nurses in our dedicated recovery wards. These are situated within each theatre area ensuring continuation of care by both medical and nursing staff throughout your stay.

Our recovery nurses are also all trained by the trust Acute pain service to supplement provision of the pain management and pain control service offered within the trust. You will be nursed in the recovery ward until you are comfortable and sufficiently recovered from anaesthesia before returning to your ward.
