Please be aware that the Minor Injuries Unit at Congleton War Memorial Hospital is closed on this dates due to temporary staff redeployment. 

Instead, patients requiring urgent care or treatment can access these services through the Accident and Emergency Department at Macclesfield Hospital

NHS 111, GPs and local pharmacies can also offer help, advice and treatment for lots of common conditions. A list of local pharmacies across Eastern Cheshire and their opening hours can be found here on Eastern Cheshire Clinical Commissioning Group’s website.

East Cheshire NHS Trust’s GP Out-of-Hours Service can also be used for assessment, advice and treatment as required for urgent healthcare problems during evenings, weekends and bank holidays that cannot safely wait until your GP surgery is open. Temporary closures of Congleton War Memorial Hospital’s Minor Injuries Unit

Please note that the Minor Injuries Unit at Congleton War Memorial Hospital will be closed at weekends and bank holidays until further notice. The unit can also be subject to temporary weekday closures - this is in order to redeploy staff to manage high levels of demand at Macclesfield Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department.

Please check this page before starting your journey to use the Minor Injuries Unit – details of any temporary weekday closures will be posted above. 

We apologise to patients who have been affected by these short periods of closure. All other services delivered from the Congleton War Memorial Hospital site are unaffected.

Minor Injuries Unit overview

The Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) at Congleton War Memorial Hospital and treats patients with minor injuries such as:

  • Minor burns
  • Cuts
  • Minor foreign body removal, ie splinters
  • Sprains
  • Minor finger dislocations

Please note - the Minor Injuries Unit cannot deal with minor illnesses like a GP walk-in centre would, is not able to treat children under five years old and cannot treat eye problems.

Our staff

The Minor Injuries Unit is staffed by emergency nurse practitioners (ENP) who have access to clinical support from consultants.The role of the ENP has expanded in recent years, they have skills to enable them to assess, treat and discharge patients who have uncomplicated problems. They can request x-rays, supply medicines (particularly pain relief), suture and apply plaster of Paris if appropriate.  

When you arrive at the unit

When you arrive at the unit you will be assessed by an ENP who will determine the nature of your  injury. You may be sent for an X-ray and/or might be given some medicines to relieve any pain. However, if your injury is severe you will be referred to the Accident and Emergency Department at Macclesfield District General Hospital.

Opening times

  • Monday to Friday - 9am to 5pm (x-rays 9am to 5pm) with a break for lunch from 1pm to 1.30pm. 
  • Saturday and Sunday - closed until further notice (winter 2018/19 onwards).

Additional Information

The emergency nurse practitioners are able to see a wide range of minor injuries including limb injuries, animal bites, minor burns and minor head injuries.
