The Oncology Research Team is part of the Acute Care Business Group. We specialise in cancer research at Macclesfield District General Hospital. The team provides cancer patients with accessibility to high quality cancer studies at their local hospital.
Our aim is to allow patients being cared for in the NHS to benefit from past cancer research studies and to continue to benefit from research that is currently being carried out.
The main role of the Oncology Research Team is to set up and run cancer clinical trials at Macclesfield District General Hospital so that patients do not have to travel to Christie Hospital to be offered the chance to take part in research. Cancer clinical trials are carried out on large groups of patients to try to find new and better treatments for cancer. They are the only reliable way to find out if a new treatment is better than what is already available.
The team consists of five oncology research sisters and a research assistant, responsible for running clinical trials and three clinical trials administrators, providing general administrative support and trial data collection.

Your consultant will refer you to the research team for an appropriate treatment trial or they may contact you by letter if you are eligible for a study.
You will be introduced to one of the Oncology Research Nurses or the Research Assistant.
We are based at Macclesfield District General Hospital's Cancer Resource Centre, ground floor next to WRVS Shop.
Q.What type of studies do you run?
A. We do not run Phase 1 trials. The trials that we run look at how effective a treatment is, whether it is better than the standard treatment and trials which find out more about the side effects and long term risks and benefits. We also run genetic trials.
