Adult Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Service

The Adult Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Service provides a musculoskeletal service to the population of East Cheshire NHS Trust.

Musculoskeletal physiotherapists assess and treat problems with muscle, bone and joints that may cause pain, stiffness and/or disability. The Adult Musculoskeletal team provide specialist assessment followed by expert advice and treatment for a wide range of joint and muscular related problems including rehabilitation after orthopaedic surgery.

The team considers the individual patient needs, ensuring that they put them at the centre of all they do.  Appointments are available in a range of locations to provide local care in the appropriate setting to support patient rehabilitation.  We will also support with ongoing self-management of patients conditions where appropriate.

Our physiotherapists are all registered with the Healthcare Professions Council (HCPC) and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP). There is a range of staff, including those who have many years’ experience and areas of specialty.  The team prides themselves on continually updating their skills and practice to ensure that high quality care is provided to all our patients. The service primarily treats adults, but will accept referrals for children where the primary problem is a musculoskeletal disorder e.g. knee pain.

How can I make my first appointment with a Physiotherapist?

  • All referrals will be assessed by a member of the clinical team, which ensures you are seen by the correct Physiotherapist. At this point you will be contacted by letter or telephone to invite you to make an appointment convenient to you.
  • All appointments are made by a central booking team who can be contacted on 01625 661875 or via email ecn-tr.therapyreferral@nhs.net

About your appointments

  • It is advisable to bring appropriate clothing to allow the physiotherapist to assess and treat you, for example a pair of shorts for assessment of leg and foot or a vest top for assessment of back / shoulders / neck.
  • Please bring a list of medication you are taking where applicable.
  • Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • Please inform the physiotherapist when you arrive if you have an electrical implant e.g. pacemaker or if you may by pregnant.

  • Your first visit may not involve any treatment.
  • For follow up appointments, patients will have a treatment time of approximately 20-30 minutes but this does vary depending on the type of treatment used.
