Stroke services
The Stroke Service is based at Macclesfield District General Hospital and comprises of inpatient care for people who have had an acute stroke. The Stroke Unit is based on Ward 11 and has 24 beds, approximately 6 - 8 of these are for acute admissions and the rest are for our patients ongoing rehabilitation. The service also provides outpatient clinics carried out by Dr Sein, Stroke Consultant and Stephen Cross, Stroke Coordinator.
The Stroke Unit provides high quality care for anyone over the age of 18 who has suffered an acute stroke or Transient Ischaemic attack.

- To give the best evidenced based care to those patients who are referred to the service with stroke or TIA.
Our services
The Stroke Team cares for patients post stroke and TIA in the acute and rehabilitation phase of the stroke pathway. A stroke patients stay in hospital can be from a few days to several weeks, depending on their needs. During an inpatient stay or if a patient is seen as an out patient any relevant investigations are carried out and appropriate care/secondary prevention commenced.

The team consists of many disciplines including medical staff, nurses, therapists, social workers, Stroke Association support workers. Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy teams are also based on Ward 11.

Opening and visiting times
Ward 11 visiting times are:
- 2.00pm - 4.00pm
- 7.00pm- 8.00pm
How do I refer/access the service
Acute stroke admissions are referred to the service via A&E or the on call medical team. In-patient referrals should be sent to Dr Sein or by bleeping the stroke co-ordinator. TIA referrals are done via the TIA referral form that is held by all departments and GP’s. In-patients can be referred by contacting the stroke co-ordinator.
Who will I see?
In outpatients you will be seen either by Dr Sein, Stroke Consultant, Stephen Cross, Stroke Coordinator or the Specialist Registrar working in stroke medicine.
As an inpatient, patients will seen/reviewed be by some or all of the following:
- Medical staff
- Nurses
- Physiotherapists
- Occupational therapists
- Speech therapists
- Social worker
- Dietitian
Other disciplines may be asked to see specific patient’s as required.
