Chronic Pain Management Service

The Chronic Pain Management service provides:

  • Holistic multi disciplinary approach to chronic pain management.
  • Developing the patient as the expert is the long-term strategy which will enable patients to self manage their pain utilizing a pain plan.
  • Clinicians with expert knowledge in pain control management
  • Effective use of skill mix to maximize skills base within the service
  • Contributes to 18 week wait targets
  • Contributes to hospital avoidance target.

Our aim is to optimize patient’s overall management, function and capacity of chronic pain, using the evidence based bio-psychosocial chronic pain model in line with the national chronic pain guidelines.

Our departmental objectives

  • Provide a multi-disciplinary approach in the effective management of chronic pain.
  • Empower patients to self manage their condition.
  • Optimize use of medication and where appropriate reduce this.
  • Reduce the patient’s experience of pain including physical, psychological and behavioral components.
  • Optimize the patient’s function.

Our services 

Your first consultation will be with the specialist nurse, who will take a detailed history of your pain. The decision will be made as to which member of the team you would benefit most from seeing next. The consultation will include discussions about your pain, investigations, sleep pattern, mood, current and previous treatments.

The specialist physiotherapist sees patients with a diverse range of chronic pain conditions. Assessing patients within the bio-psychosocial model and assists them to manage their pain better within the multi-disciplinary setting either through the pain management programme or individual session working on exercise, posture and changes in activity.

Other Team Members:

  • Two Consultant Anesthetists from Stepping Hill hospital, who work extensively in Chronic pain
  • Psychological Therapist, who will assess how your thoughts and feelings impact on your pain.

Opening times

  • Office hours are 8:30am – 4:30pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • Clinics run on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
  • Calls outside these times will be forwarded to voicemail.

How do I refer/access the service?

Usually via GP but other referral sources can be: East Cheshire NHS Trust Consultants, Acute Pain Service, MCATS
