Pharmacy Education and Training

The Pharmacy Department is committed to education and training and supports a range of activities to develop staff from both within the pharmacy and around the trust.

Our team comprises of senior pharmacists who provide support for Continuing Professional Development (CPD), Medicines Management Training, pre-registration training, and in-house FY1/FY2 doctor training. They co-ordinate the rotational training of our newly qualified band 6 pharmacists which includes medicine, surgery, Emergency Floor, Technical Services (Aseptics and Production Unit), and medicines information. Our band 6 pharmacists are also fully supported to undertake a post-graduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy.

Pharmacists may be given the opportunity to undertake a non-medical prescribing course where a clinical role has been established.

Our chief pharmacy technician is directly responsible for supervising, designing and organising pre-registration pharmacist, pharmacy technician and assistant technical officer training which includes rotational training in aseptic services, dispensary services, distribution services, pharmacy purchasing and the pharmacy re-packaging unit. Student pharmacy technicians and assistant technical officers have access to in-house NVQ assessors.

CPD

All pharmacy staff are invited to participate in both formal and informal training to support their professional development and further develop the skill mix of the department which are then reflected in their personal development plans.

In order to support CPD activity we operate the Learning at Lunch (LAL) programme. This gives all staff the opportunity to develop their presentation skills and contribute to the training programme within the department. Pharmacists are also invited to attend the weekly ‘Grand Round’ clinical training session

New starters

All new staff, including experienced pharmacists, undertake a comprehensive induction training programme, which follows the trust's Induction Policy.

Work Experience

The department welcomes applications for work experience from school, college and university students.
