Health Visiting Service

Health visitors are specialist public health practitioners who have expertise and experience in safeguarding, child development and family health. All children under five years of age have a health visitor. The role includes:

  • Working with individual families with preschool children and focusing on the determinants of health and health inequalities.
  • Promoting the health and wellbeing of preschool children and their families.
  • Partnership working with other agencies such as Children’s Centres and Social Care to allow the service to work in the best interest of the child.

  • family support
  • parenting skills
  • domestic abuse
  • alcohol or drug abuse
  • and many more

Changes to health visiting and school nurse services in Cheshire - from October 2015

Some changes to your health visiting and school nursing services took place in Autumn 2015 with a switch in responsibility for the services between NHS organisations.

The changes have come about because Cheshire East Council recently invited bids to deliver the ‘Healthy Child Programme 0-19 Years’ (a Government-led early intervention and prevention public health programme which shapes the work of health visitors and school nurses) across the Cheshire East footprint.

East Cheshire Trust currently provides health visiting and school nursing services in the Cheshire East area but was not chosen to deliver the Healthy Child Programme, which covers the next three to five years. Instead, another local NHS healthcare provider, Wirral Community NHS Trust, was successful in its bid to deliver the programme and started doing so from October.

Many school nurses and health visitors currently employed by the trust were transferred to Wirral Community NHS Trust. Colleagues at both organisations worked closely to ensure a seamless transfer of services, both for the employees concerned and the schools, families and young people they serve.

Contact details for health visitors will remain the same. You may also receive information directly from your local health visitors and school nurses. Health visitors in the Vale Royal area of Cheshire are not affected and remain under the employment of East Cheshire NHS Trust.
