Our Services

Pharmacy Repackaging Unit

The Repackaging Unit provides a valuable service to East Cheshire and other NHS trusts by packing down and/or labelling medicines in a form that is ready to use by patients. This means that precious nursing and pharmacy time can be saved by having packs ready to use on the wards, in clinics and in A&E.

To provide this service the unit holds a manufacturer's specials license from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and has to demonstrate that all work is done according to "Good Manufacturing Practice". This means that our facilities and equipment have to be of a high standard, that our staff are well trained and knowledgeable, and that everything we do has to be documented. To ensure that we are complying with these rigorous standards we carry out regular internal & external audits.  We are also inspected by the MHRA.

All this is done at no cost whatsoever to East Cheshire NHS Trust as the prices we charge cover all our staffing, premises and maintenance costs.

A range of products are made to meet a variety of clinical needs, with the pack size and labelling tailored according to these particular requirements. With the increase in use of automated dispensing systems bar codes are being introduced onto the packs to enable them to be stored in these systems. Approximately 400,000 packs are produced each year with the size of each batch ranging from as small as 40 up to as many as 2,000.

The unit is staffed by a range of full time and part time staff including assistant technical officers, clerical officer, technical staff, quality controller and pharmacists.
