The Christie Quality Mark was recently awarded to the Macmillan Cancer Resource Centre at Macclesfield Hospital.

The Quality Mark is awarded to Christie outreach centres like the Macclesfield unit if they can demonstrate excellent levels of care and patient satisfaction and was developed following months of research to find out what patients value about Christie services.

Before awarding the accreditation, a site visit is carried out by a team including external senior nurses, a senior Christie nurse, governors and patients who speak with patients and staff. The Christie assessed Macclesfield’s Macmillan Cancer Resource Centre on criteria covering records and documentation, governance processes, patient satisfaction, training and environment.

After meeting all required standards, East Cheshire NHS Trust, which runs Macclesfield Hospital, was presented with the Quality Mark by Jackie Bird, The Christie’s executive director of nursing and quality.

Macclesfield Hospital treats patients on behalf of The Christie, which means they can receive the same standard of treatment locally rather than travelling to The Christie’s main site in Withington, Manchester. Four Christie doctors regularly hold clinics in Macclesfield as part of the arrangement and last year, 2,600 treatments were given to patients in Macclesfield rather than at The Christie.

Joy Titterton, lead chemotherapy nurse, said: “The partnership we have with The Christie means that local patients can enjoy the best of both worlds – the most up-to-date cancer treatment from a world-leading specialist centre but delivered in their local hospital.

“We are very proud that our colleagues at The Christie have recognised the hard work and dedication of staff here in Macclesfield through the Quality Mark.”

Kath Senior, director of nursing, performance and quality, said: “This is a great endorsement of our services and the professionalism of our staff. It shows local patients that they can expect top quality oncology treatment and care from the trust in partnership with The Christie.”

Jackie Bird, executive director of nursing and quality at The Christie said: “I feel very proud to present the Christie Quality Mark award to the Macmillan Cancer Resource Centre staff at Macclesfield Hospital.

“Huge congratulations to the team for this achievement. This award demonstrates their hard work and dedication to delivering the best possible standard of patient treatment and care.”
