Consultant outpatient clinic appointments at Handforth Health Centre
13 October 2017

East Cheshire NHS Trust is relocating a small number of outpatient clinics from Handforth Health Centre to its Macclesfield, Congleton and Knutsford hospital sites.

This decision was taken following a recent public consultation which ran from July to September 2017.  The trust received almost 90 responses; those opposing the changes raised concerns around increased travel time and associated costs patients from the Handforth area could encounter.  Other objections related to perceived increases in patient numbers from new housing developments.  However, other responses were supportive of the proposals, given the extra costs of £65,000 which the trust would incur to continue to provide outpatient appointments from Handforth.

Trust Chief Executive John Wilbraham explained:  “We have engaged with local people to ensure we understand their concerns and I would like to thank all those who took the time to give us their views. Like many NHS organisations we are financially challenged and we made the decision not to increase additional annual costs which would not result in added clinical benefits to our patients.

“We found that less than half of the patients attending the clinics in question are from the Handforth area and many patients attending outpatient appointments will already travel to our Macclesfield site during their pathway of care for further tests and treatments. It is important to stress that our community services delivered by nursing and therapy staff will remain at Handforth Clinic and are not affected by this decision.”

The trust’s decision was explained to members of Cheshire East Council’s Health and Adult Social Care and Communities Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Thursday 12th October 2017.

The Outpatient clinics which have now relocated are as follows:

  • Orthopaedics
  • Gynaecology
  • Urology
  • Breast Surgery
  • Audiology
  • Paediatrics
  • Rheumatology
  • Respiratory Medicine
  • General Surgery
