Flip your way to victory at the 2017 Macclesfield Pancake Race
13 February 2017

Local businesses, clubs and organisations are being invited to have fun, get out in the local community and raise money for a worthy cause by entering Macclesfield’s annual pancake race.

The Shrove Tuesday event, which this year falls on February 28th, sees competitors sprinting up and down Mill Street outside Macclesfield Town Hall while tossing pancakes.

The competing teams run a relay race up and down a short course between two points while flipping a pancake in a frying pan. Macclesfield’s businesses, clubs and organisations are being urged to promote themselves, have some fun and support local health services at the same time by entering a team of four.

Registration is just £20 per team of four and there is no minimum sponsorship amount. Instead, organisers simply ask that team members aim to raise as much money for the charity in sponsorship as they can for this great local cause.

The event is being run by ECHO - the official charity of East Cheshire NHS Trust, which runs local health services including Macclesfield District General Hospital. Any funds raised for ECHO go towards providing the most up-to-date equipment, pioneering treatment and staff development – all to improve direct patient care, both at Macclesfield District General Hospital and in other local community healthcare services.

A number of prizes will be on offer – including a prize for best fancy dress - and local radio station Silk FM will be on hand to compere and keep the crowds entertained.

Fiona Doorey, ECHO’s fundraising manager, said: “ECHO has now been running Macclesfield’s annual pancake race event for three years and I’m delighted to say it has gone from strength to strength.

“This year’s event should be bigger and better than ever, so we want as many local businesses and organisations as possible to enter and we’re hoping for a good crowd to turn out and spectate on the day. Our thanks goes to the local businesses who will be at the race selling refreshments on the day  - all be donating profits raised to ECHO.

“The pancake race is a great, fun way to bring the community together and raise funds for important local NHS services at the same time.”

While fancy dress is not compulsory, it is actively encouraged as fun and wacky costumes are a staple fixture of the pancake race. Registration takes place outside the town hall at 10.00am and the first race is at 11.00am. The races should be completed by 1pm so the event can fit around the working day.

Pans and real pancakes will all be provided on the day. As in previous years, volunteers from the trust, trust staff and volunteers from the Rotary Club will be providing stewards for the event and Cheshire East Council is very kindly providing barriers, street management and other important facilities on the day.
