Bringing assistance and PAT dogs onto trust premises including Macclesfield Hospital

Assistance dogs such as guide dogs or hearing dogs are welcome on East Cheshire NHS Trust premises, which include Macclesfield District General Hospital (MDGH), Congleton War Memorial Hospital, Knutsford and District Community Hospital and other community locations.

Assistance dogs may enter all areas except for the following (all of which are on the MDGH site):

  • Theatres
  • Recovery
  • Intensive Care Unit
  • High Dependency Unit
  • Special Care Baby Unit Maternity Department

MDGH’s Renal Unit is operated by Fresenius Medical Care Ltd whose policy is to allow assistance dogs providing the dog is handled solely by the owner and under close control at all times. A side room would be used for the visit and cleaned after use. Please see the trust's Procedure for Visiting Assistance Dogs, PAT Dogs and Pet Dogs for further information - it can be found on this page in the policies section of the trust's website

Pets as Therapy (PAT) dogs

Research has shown that pets can often enhance the quality of life for older people and people who are ill and therefore the trust welcomes the use of PAT dogs in appropriate areas. All PAT dog owners must register with the trust as volunteers before arranging any visits and meet a number of other requirements. Please see the trust's Procedure for Visiting Assistance Dogs, PAT Dogs and Pet Dogs for further information - it can be found on this page in the policies section of the trust's website
