Deciding to keep the baby

If you want to go through with the pregnancy your doctor will refer you to your local community midwife. Midwives are a special kind of nurse whose job it is to look after pregnant women and their unborn babies up until the first few weeks after birth. You can now make an appointment directly with the midwife or see your local family doctor to discuss your future care.

Your midwife will offer advice and support throughout your pregnancy, carrying out regular checks to make sure that you stay fit and well and that your baby is growing as it should be. Midwives also arrange antenatal (pre-birth) classes, where groups of mums-to-be can get together and find out about labour, birth and becoming a parent.
