After being awarded funding for significant improvements to the trust’s current endoscopy and radiology departments, building work is now well underway to modernise and transform our hospital of the future.
Contractors are now on site working on the expansion and redesign of the endoscopy treatment unit (ETU) and reconfiguration of the existing radiography department to improve patient flow and experience.
The redesign will be built over two floors and will make way for an expanded ETU recovery area, two additional endoscopy treatment rooms and an additional MRI suite.
The building work will not impact the trust’s current services and patients receiving care from endoscopy or radiology should continue to attend their appointments.
Simon Goff, Chief Operating Officer said; “The extension looks to extend the current endoscopy department to support a reduction in waiting times, within a significantly improved environment for patients.
“The new MRI scanner will be housed underneath to help improve radiology patient flow and patient experience.
“This development is a fantastic addition for patients at Macclesfield Hospital with state-of-the-art clinical areas to support patient treatment and care.”
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a type of scan that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of the body.
An MRI scan can be used to examine different parts of the body, including the brain and spinal cord, bones and joints, heart, and blood vessels as well as internal organs.
The results of an MRI scan can help diagnose conditions, plan treatments, and assess how effective previous treatment has been.
An endoscopy is a test to look inside your body using a long thin tube with a small camera inside. There are different types of endoscopies that look at different parts of the body and the type of endoscopy depends on a patient’s symptoms.
Work is due to be complete by the end of summer 2023.
