Patients on Ward 9 at Macclesfield Hospital can now enjoy a newly transformed outdoor sanctuary, thanks to a four-week makeover delivered by construction partner City Build.
Building on its strong relationship with East Cheshire NHS Trust, City Build donated its time, expertise, and materials to create a safe, accessible, and welcoming sanctuary for some of our most vulnerable patients.
Ward 9, which specialises in acute care for older adults and patients living with dementia, now features a refurbished courtyard designed to provide a calm, safe, and welcoming environment.
The refurbished courtyard includes level paving, secure fencing, attractive planting, and a bespoke wooden shelter, providing an environment where patients can spend time outdoors with loved ones.
Access to fresh air and therapeutic outdoor spaces can have a significant positive impact on wellbeing, particularly for patients living with dementia.
Lisa Nixon, Activities Coordinator on Ward 9, said: "Access to fresh air and a peaceful environment makes a world of difference for our dementia patients.
“Having a safe, accessible space where individuals can relax, socialise or spend time with family outdoors helps reduce anxiety and enhance wellbeing."
To build on this fantastic foundation, colleagues on the ward will continue fundraising to add further plants, sensory features, and outdoor accessories, helping make the space even more beneficial for those who use it.
Dave Gamble from City Build added: "Having worked closely with the Trust on several projects in recent years, we wanted to give something back to the hospital and the people it serves as part of our commitment to social value.
“Ward 9 carries out vital work, and our team was proud to give their time, and skills free of charge to improve the garden and create a welcoming outdoor space for patients and staff."
