East Cheshire NHS Trust confirms interim leadership arrangements

19 June 2026

East Cheshire NHS Trust can confirm its interim leadership arrangements following the upcoming retirement of Chief Executive Ged Murphy at the end of July.

Following a thorough and inclusive recruitment process involving colleagues, patients, and stakeholders, an appointment for the position of Chief Executive Officer has been made.

While final pre-employment checks are completed, the details of the successful candidate will be formally shared once arrangements are complete. The incoming Chief Executive is scheduled to officially start in October.

To ensure stability during the transition period between August and October, Dr John Hunter, the Trust’s current Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Chief Executive, will take on the role of Interim Chief Executive, effective from 1st August 2026.

John’s leadership will provide continuity over the summer months as the Trust maintains focus on its strategic and operational priorities.

Aislinn O’Dwyer, Chair of East Cheshire NHS Trust, said: "We are pleased to have appointed our permanent Chief Executive following a robust recruitment process, and we look forward to formally introducing them once final arrangements are complete.

"To guide us through the transition period, we are delighted that Dr John Hunter will step up as Interim Chief Executive. John’s role as Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Chief Executive provides the continuity required to maintain momentum on our plans.

“I would also like to extend our continued thanks to Ged Murphy for his five years of service and his support during this handover period."
