East Cheshire NHS Trust maternity services - CQC report published

10 May 2024

Following an inspection in December 2023 by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) the maternity service at Macclesfield District General Hospital, run by East Cheshire NHS Trust, has retained a rating of Good for Well-led and Good overall. The rating for how Safe the service is has reduced from Good to Requires Improvement.

The inspection was carried out as part of CQC’s national maternity services inspection programme and the Trust's full report is published this Friday (10th May) on the CQC's website.

This was a focused inspection, therefore CQC did not inspect how effective, caring and responsive the services were. These areas retain their previous Good rating.

Ged Murphy, Chief Executive Officer for East Cheshire NHS Trust, said: “We accept the outcome of the inspection and are pleased that our rating of Good overall for the service has been retained. We are very pleased to note that the CQC recognised outstanding practice after the Trust returned the service following a three-year suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic; and will be developing an action plan to address areas of improvement recommended in the inspection report. We were also pleased with the feedback that stated that it is clear we have a strong sense of what we want to achieve and the report reflected our drive for improvement.”

Kate Daly-Brown, Director of Nursing and Quality for East Cheshire NHS Trust, said: “We are pleased with the outcome, but accept that there is still more work to do to improve some aspects of safety and enhance the experience of patients who use this service

“As a local resident in East Cheshire I am passionate about our maternity services and incredibly proud of our exceptionally committed teams who provide a quality maternity service for the local population. We will carry on with our journey of continuous improvement to provide the very best level of safe quality care for our community.”

The overall rating for Macclesfield District General Hospital has not changed following the inspection; therefore it remains rated as Requires Improvement, with an overall rating for East Cheshire NHS Trust remaining Good overall.
