Staff from Macclesfield Hospital’s Emergency Department will be reaching new heights in August as they take on the National Three Peaks Challenge to raise funds aimed at enhancing the experience for both staff and patients.
Taking place on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd August, 11 healthcare workers from the department will embark on an extraordinary journey and challenge of hiking the National Three Peaks in under 24 hours.
Starting in the breathtaking landscapes of Scotland and culminating in the stunning hills of Wales, the team, which includes doctors, nurses and other members, aim to conquer Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, all while racing against the clock.
Matt Heywood, Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Macclesfield Hospital, said: “This endeavour is not just about the physical challenge, but also about coming together as a team to improve the environment for our patients and staff.
“We want to make our environment more comfortable and inviting not only for our patients but also for our incredibly hard-working staff.
“I’m the lucky one of the team who gets to do the driving between the mountains, as well as making sure there is food, drink and dry kit in the bus for our intrepid adventurers.
“The support we’ve received so far has been overwhelming, including Mr Botwe and the team at Tytherington School, who have very generously lent us one of their minibuses the trip.”
The well-known challenge sees adventurers climb and descend the peaks of the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales, within 24 hours. The walking distance covered is around 26 miles, whilst climbing and descending around 3000 m (10,000 feet).
