Picnic in the Park event to celebrate Congleton War Memorial Hospital’s centenary year

1 May 2024

Join us to celebrate 100 years of Congleton War Memorial Hospital at a special ‘Picnic in the Park’ event at the end of this month.

Hosted by Congleton Town Council, the 1920s-themed event will take place on Monday 27th May at Congleton Park and will commemorate 100 years of the hospital.

Running between 12pm – 5pm, the free entry event will be filled with live music and entertainment, including a brass band, a 1920s swing band, RSPCA dog show, traditional games and much more.

Rachel McCarthy, Congleton Town Council’s Town Centre and Events Officer said: “We’ve pulled out all the stops to organise a huge picnic and family fun day in the beautiful surroundings of Congleton Park to celebrate Congleton War Memorial Hospital’s 100th Anniversary.

“Communities, neighbours, friends, and groups across Congleton are invited to gather together for an enjoyable afternoon of music and entertainment.

“We hope as many people as possible can join us to celebrate this historic occasion.”

Established in 1924, the hospital was paid for by the local community as a memorial to the 243 local people killed in the First World War, and today remains an essential part of the town.

As part of the centenary celebrations, East Cheshire NHS Charity’s Wellbeing Appeal was recently launched to raise £10,000 to improve the wellbeing of staff, volunteers and patients at the hospital through a range of initiatives.

Donations will go towards the installation of comfortable seating and secluded rest spots and a wellbeing garden, allowing hospital staff to relax and unwind close to nature during their breaks and the transformation of clinical environments with calming murals and artwork.
