Consultants set to go the distance and take on Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge in aid of Macclesfield Hospital

26 April 2024

1.jpgTwo consultants at Macclesfield Hospital are set to walk a combined distance of 150km to raise money for East Cheshire NHS Charity.

Dr Michelle Kelly, Acute Medicine Consultant and Dr Katherine White, Consultant in Care of Older People, will be taking on the distance through the Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge in May.

Monies raised will support the Acute and Elderly Care Ward which specialises in dementia and will help with the refurbishment of the ward’s dementia garden and support the organisation of activities, which help patients feel more settled and engaged during their stay.

The challenge will take the duo along the spectacular southern cliffs, past the iconic Needles and up to historic Cowes at the halfway stop, with Katherine aiming to walk around the whole of the island, which totals 106km and Michelle, who has an injured hamstring, is aiming to join her for 54km of it.

Michelle said: “Ward 9 is close to both of our hearts having both worked on there. Lisa, the Activities Coordinator, is working on a project to refresh the dementia garden and making it a haven for patients and their relatives.

“Access to natural daylight is very important in regulating body clocks, especially in disorientated and delirious patients. At present the garden is in a bit of a sorry state and we hope to raise enough funds to refurbish it.”

Lily Preston, Fundraising Manager added: “Good luck to Katherine and Michelle on this incredible challenge! We’re so grateful to them both for supporting Ward 9 and we can’t wait to hear how they get on.”
