Medical Education

East Cheshire NHS Trust is a recognised hospital for doctors in training and has a wide spectrum of trainees. We are affiliated with the University Of Manchester School Of Medicine for undergraduate medical students. A recent annual assessment visit from Health Education North West described the trust as a "trust that values education, supervision and the welfare of doctors in training grades".

The Postgraduate Medical Education Department at East Cheshire NHS Trust is committed to promoting excellence in healthcare, education and training for doctors. All trainees are encouraged to get involved in education by teaching others, entering our annual presentation competition or leading and developing simulation scenarios.

We host medical students (from year 3), Foundation Doctors and Specialty Trainees (including those in General Practice) to undertake placements across a range of acute specialties and community services.

Feedback from trainees is extremely positive with year 4 medical students rating our O&G teaching the highest in the Northwest region in 2017/18. In the 2018 annual survey of trainees by the GMC, our CMTs rated this trust the best in the region for local teaching. Our Orthopaedics and Respiratory programmes score consistently highly in the GMC survey of trainees.

We also support SAS doctors and Trust Grade doctors with career progression and access to educational opportunities. We are the first trust in the region to appoint a tutor to support doctors who are not in training posts, locally employed doctors (LEDs), to have access to the same opportunities as trainees.

Our simulation department is an accredited centre and we are leading the way with multidisciplinary programmes in mental health and the Safe Critically Ill Transfer Training (SCITT). Simulation is embedded in all our teaching programmes.

We administer and deliver the following programs:-

  • Foundation Programme
  • GPVTS teaching
  • Support for SAS doctors (professional development and medical education)
  • Undergraduate Medical Education Program (in association with Manchester Medical School)
  • Simulation and clinical skills (see photos below)
  • Trainer accreditation for Consultants and SAS doctors
  • Junior doctor induction
  • Grand Round multi-disciplinary lectures
